Dawsonville, Georgia

Walter Thomas Azpell Sr. “Walt”
February 14, 1938-December 1, 2024
Walt passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his bedside on December 1, 2024. He was 86.
Walt was born to Walter and Helen Azpell on February 14, 1938. He was the oldest of three brothers, and was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his education at St. Joseph Preparatory School transferring to West Catholic High School where he graduated in 1955. He went on to attend Villanova University.
Walt and Carol were married on May 9, 1959 and began to build their lives and family in Philadelphia, PA. Walt made a career move in his profession of consumer finance in 1965 relocating to Stone Mountain, GA. In 1977, they moved their family and settled in Hoover, AL where Walt continued working for many years at Goldome Credit Corporation and eventually branched out starting his own consumer lending business, Phoenix Financial Services in 1989.
Walt enjoyed many great vacations with family and friends. A lot of his time was spent with family as well as dear lifelong friends in Destin, FL. He also loved the game of golf, fishing and watching Crimson Tide football.
Walt had a deep bench of virtues – most notably his love for his family. He had a great sense of humor, and he kept friends and family entertained with his wealth of knowledge and great stories, even when his health began to decline. Walt could always be found with a grandchild at his side or he would be making a phone call or sending texts to check in on them. Walt was a wonderful husband, father, a very proud and loving grandfather and great-grandfather, and a loyal friend to those he loved. Those who knew him will forever be blessed.
He is survived by his beloved wife Carol Azpell (nee Cappie), daughter Chrissy Warren (Rob) of Hartwell, GA; daughter Jeannie Concannon (Pat) of West Chester, PA; son Walter Thomas “Tommy” Azpell (Angela) of Franklin, TN; son Michael Jeffrey Azpell (Jana) of Kansas City, MO and daughter Amy Cohen (Jason) of Dahlonega GA. He is also survived by his brother, Jeffrey Azpell of La Quinta, CA and 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Azpell and his brother John “Jack” Azpell.
A private family memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Dahlonega Funeral Home in Dahlonega, GA followed by a Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
