Salvatore Michael Aligheri

Salvatore "Sal" Michael Aligheri of Cumming, Georgia passed away suddenly at the age of 94 on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Northside Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, Georgia with his beloved family around him. His death was from an unknown abdominal pain that lead to cardiac arrest.
Born June 21, 1925 and raised in New York City's Chelsea District.

In his early years, Sal was devoted to providing for his family. He grew up during the Great Depression where he told memories of his first jobs as a young boy delivering bread and ice door to door, walking many flights of stairs. He had many other odd jobs during his childhood in order to support his family. He had a very long and successful career in the Garment industry working manufacturing many brands, Cathy Hardwick, Lord Williams, Osh Kosh, Carter's and Izod to name just a few. His career took him to many places both in the U.S. and other countries. He was loved and well respected by his employers and his employees.

He met his wife Dorothy (Dot) in Fall River Massachusetts where they fell in love and married. They soon moved to the south and made their home in Greenville, South Carolina.

He was an avid athlete. As a young boy he loved playing stick ball, basketball and swimming. Later, he also enjoyed being a spectator at his children and grandchildren's events. Before his beginnings of dementia, he actually was at the top of the leader board (in his early eighties) at the Forsyth County YMCA for the most reps and weights. Of course, he actually told them he was only in his seventies.
Sal's hobbies included reading, working, cooking, listening to Big Band music, dancing, taking cruises, Sudoku and spending time with family and friends.

Sal's most memorable trait was his love for life and for people. He loved to tell jokes and he loved to laugh. Even when Dementia/Alzheimer's had started to wear on his memory, he didn't stop trying to bring joy to others.

Sal is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dot" (Albert) Aligheri and his parents, Francesco (John) Alighieri and his mother Louisa (Adduci) Alighieri, his brother John Alighieri and wife Jessie Alighieri. He ieaves his son and daughter n law, Tim and Maria Aligheri, his daughters Kim Volkmar and her late husband Mike Volkmar and Tina Dover and husband Mark Dover; granddaughter, Megan (Aligheri) Lambert and her husband Justin Lambert; two grandsons, Mark Thomas Dover and Tavis Dover; Niece Louann Killeen and husband Mike Killeen and their daughters Amanda, Caitlin, and Sarah. He is also survived by other extended family and close friends.

A Celebration of Sal's life will be held at 1 pm, on Friday July 26th, at the Chapel at McDonald and Son Funeral Home, 150 Sawnee Dr, Cumming, GA 30040, with Minister Kurt Picker officiating.
