Alpharetta, Georgia
It is with profound sadness that we announce that Colonel Robert X. Schmitz, 78, passed away suddenly and peacefully in his home in Alpharetta, GA, on August 21, 2026.
Bob was born on April 26, 1948, in Decatur, Indiana. As an only child, his lifelong passion for basketball and love of dalmatians began at an early age.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967, later earning his commission as an officer. He was a proud Vietnam veteran who also served overseas in Germany and later at the Pentagon during the Gulf War. During his distinguished military service, Colonel Schmitz earned numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal (1st Class), and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was proud to serve his country.
Bob met the love of his life, Rachel, and they married in December 1972. They had five children and built a beautiful life together. He was successful and supported his family through his career in banking and real estate. Bob and Rachel were devoted to one another throughout their 53 years of marriage.
Bob loved his country, but nothing compared to the importance of his family. His strong exterior could easily be warmed by the joy brought to him by his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed sitting around the table, sharing a meal with family, with his top choice of “steak and bake” and a celebratory Baked Alaska dessert on special occasion. The conversation was often filled with him sharing stories of his life experiences and extensive world travels.
Bob loved watching and talking about sports. He could often be seen cheering on one of his favorite teams which included Indiana Hoosiers basketball, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and Tennessee Volunteers football.
During his retirement, many days were spent on the Mount Dora golf course. More recently he enjoyed spending time with his Windward friends. Unable to fully embrace the slower pace of retired life, Bob stayed active taking on roles in his community.
Bob was a simple man that found joy in everyday life, valued his family, enjoyed his hobbies, and lived an honest and sincere life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert A. and Maxine Schmitz.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Rachel; his children, Juliann (Nate), Cassie (Moses), Michelle (Colin), Bobby, and Stephen (Jourdan); his seven cherished grandchildren, Taylor, Addie, Cece, Margot, Cooper, Camden, and Vieve; and his loyal dog, Esta.
Colonel Schmitz will be laid to rest with full military honors in a private ceremony with immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the legacy fund established in Bob’s name with K9s For Warriors to honor his memory and lasting commitment to his fellow servicemen and animals.
