Robert Richard Maggi 88, of Cumming, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022.
Robert Maggi, Bob, aka "Dad" or "Poppy", was born on July 9, 1933, in New Dorp, Staten Island, NY. His parents were immigrants from Basilicata, Italy. He was the youngest of 6 siblings, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
He enjoyed the sounds of Big Band music. He was very knowledgeable in History, Baseball and Football. Babe Ruth was his favorite ball player. He played baseball in high school and was a loyal NY Giants and NY Yankees fan. He had an amazing memory of details and enjoyed sharing his detailed knowledge of pastime events.
In 1952, for the love of his country, he joined the US Air Force and became a Korean War Veteran. He was assigned to a pilot to assist with preparation of his plane for combat. He was honored for his service, when his name was painted on the plane next to his pilots.
After the war he worked on Wall Street, NYC, where he met his wife Allene. They were married in 1960. Allene was the love of his life. They enjoyed spending their time as active participants in social clubs and traveling around the world.
He joined the NYC Fire Dept in 1961 and was a firefighter for 27 years. He advanced to the honored position of "Chauffeur" for the Captain, of Engine Company 40 / Ladder 35 at Lincoln Center, Manhattan.
He adopted his only child Debra, from West Virginia, and provided a loving and happy home.
In 1988 they became proud grandparents of their 1st grandchild, Jennifer Rose and now became "Poppy". He and Allene were very close to Jennifer and were proud to watch her graduate from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
He retired in 1990 they moved to Palm Coast, FL. where they were blessed to have good friends like Julie & Tony, Fran & Dom, and many others. They loved to travel together and entertain. My dad loved to cook. In Palm Coast, he was an active member in the Knights of Columbus and the Italian American Club.
In 2019 Bob and Allene moved to Georgia. Bob got to experience the birth of his great grandson and "Little Ollie" had a special place in his heart that only the two of them could share. He was very proud to his grand daughter Christina. Christina, Michael, and their 2 yr old baby Oliver brought daily joy into his life. watch them grow into a beautiful family. They're loyalty, compassion and effort to show they loved him was unending.
In June 2021 Jenn married Gary Rabbitt. My father was very proud of Gary and bonded with him as Gary trained for the day that he took an oath to become a Jersey City, NJ Firefighter.
His youngest grandchild, and only grandson, Christopher, was given the honor of having his middle name of Robert, after my dad. He was very proud to have Christopher for a grandson. It made him happy to know that Christopher studied hard in school, was a good person, a good son and sibling, and would be successful in life.
Bob was very proud of all his grandchildren and in his final years truly enjoyed any time spent with them. He was very grateful for all the love, support and respect, that was given to him through the years. Family meant every thing to him.
Bob was a good son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great great grandfather and friend. He fought for his country, his city, his family, and his life.
We were honored to have him in our lives, and hope he is forever at peace with his God in Heaven, and all those he loved who have passed before him.
