Michael Saporsky

–

Gainesville, Georgia

Michael Saporsky passed away on June, 2, 2024, at the age of 102. Mike was born on September 12, 1921, to Russian immigrants, Alex and Anna Saporsky in Bear Creek, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of three sons.

Mike moved to Michigan as a young boy where he lived most of the rest of his life. He was active in ROTC while in high school and was drafted into the Army in 1944. After training at Fort Benning, GA, he was sent to the European theater where he was part of a team that skied the Alps searching for the enemy.

After World War II, Mike returned to Michigan, enrolled at Michigan State University, and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. Although the government offered Mike a number of positions using his physics degree, upon his graduation he decided to teach high school and college classes in physics and math.

He met Violet Schmidt while each was selling vegetables at the Detroit Farmers' Market, and they were married on July 12, 1952. Mike and Violet had four sons as Mike continued to teach science. At the age of 97, two years after Violet's death, Mike moved to Gainesville, GA, into an assisted living facility where he was lovingly cared for until his death on June 2, 2024, exactly 7 years after the death of his dear wife.

Mike leaves behind 4 sons, 15 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Mike's memory. He will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan, at a later date.
