Michael Cortez

–

Alpharetta, Georgia

From humble beginnings during the Great Depression, our beloved "Phoenix" -- a nickname
lovingly bestowed upon the man who continually rose to every challenge life presented--
was born on September 28, 1933. Michael was the second of nine children born to Eulalio
and Kai Cortez. From an early age, he possessed a curious spirit, a thirst for adventure, and a determination to create a life filled with purpose, service, and discovery.

Michael proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States
Marine Corps as a bilingual service member. He later continued his military commitment as a reservist in the United States Air Force. Following his active-duty service, Michael
dedicated much of his professional life to the United States Air Force and the Department of Defense as a Civil Service employee.

His work in aviation, electronics, and top-secret defense programs took him around the
world. Through his involvement in highly classified missions and advanced aircraft systems, Michael contributed to efforts that helped protect his nation while allowing him to experience diverse cultures and remarkable places across the globe. He carried the stories of those adventures with pride and enjoyed sharing them with family and friends
throughout his life.

At the center of Michael's world was his beloved wife, Sharon. Their romance began as a
whirlwind love story and grew into a remarkable 69-year marriage filled with devotion,
laughter, spirited banter, and unwavering companionship. Together, they built a beautiful
family, raised five children, and created a legacy that will continue for generations to come.

Michael was known for his easygoing nature, sharp wit, and unmistakable sense of style. He had a gift for making others smile with his sarcastic humor and quick comebacks. He loved music of all kinds and could often be found enjoying jazz, singing along to The Beatles, or listening to his favorite country songs. He appreciated life's simple pleasures -- good conversations, time with loved ones, and sharing a great glass of vino.

Michael was preceded in death by his son, Michael Simeon Cortez, and his beloved
grandson, James Michael Murphy.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Sharon Cortez; his children, Michele Murphy, Sherry Brazil, Marnie Rhoads, and Blayne Cortez; four cherished grandchildren; six
treasured great-grandchildren; his siblings; and many extended family members and dear
friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and humor.

Those who knew Michael will remember a man of service, integrity, adventure, and deep
love for his family. He lived a life filled with extraordinary experiences, meaningful work,
enduring friendships, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. His stories, laughter,
and generous spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of
knowing him.

Though he has taken his final flight, the legacy of our Phoenix will remain forever.
We love you, Phoenix. Fly high !

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in California.
