Mark Buren Smith
3/13/1958 - 2/22/2024

On February 22, 2024, Mark Buren Smith was welcomed home to Heaven at the age of 65 after a brave fight with cancer. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Cumming, Georgia, on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11 AM. The family will be accepting visitors that morning at 10 AM at the church.

Mark loved being with his family. He boasted many times that he chose his future wife, Catherine, at the age of 14 while they were in the church youth group at Dogwood Hills Baptist Church in Atlanta. They married in 1980 and later were thrilled to have two sons. Jacob lives and works in Seattle, and Evan lives and works in Atlanta. Mark loved his sons and was very proud of the men they have become.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Buren and Patricia Smith, and his father-in-law, Leo Wiggins.

Mark’s loves included visiting his mom regularly and later finding ways to connect with her even in the midst of her Alzheimer’s. He also loved adventures with his dad while hiking the Grand Canyon and making him laugh anytime they were together. He enjoyed time with his father-in-law fishing and just talking.

Mark cherished the life God gave him, especially the high school youth Sunday School classes, hiking and being outside in nature, the Atlanta Braves, and church hymns. Mark’s career as a software manager provided him many opportunities to problem solve and tackle his computer challenges. He enjoyed the interaction with his co-workers and learning about their families and hobbies.

He will be missed by his wife of 43 years, Catherine, his sons Jacob and Evan, his sister Karen Pope, his sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Neil Kendrick, his mother-in-law Iris Wiggins, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Scott and Jenna Wiggins, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Robin Wiggins, the many cousins, nieces and nephews, and all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church Cumming, Youth Department, 1597 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, Georgia, 30040, OR The Arbor Foundation at ArborDay.org.
