She was born to William S. and Pearl McCoy Hopkins of Winston Salem, NC in June of 1923. She graduated from North Forsyth High School (Winston Salem) in 1940. She married Hugh Curtis Dover in the summer of 1942, enrolled in Meredith College in 1944, transferred to Wake Forest College in 1946 where she graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1948. She gave birth to 3 children with Hugh, Bruce (1949), Dwane (1956) and Chyrl (1961). Hugh died in August 1980. Margaret took care of her Mother in her home from 1983 until her death in 1989 at 101 years of age. In the meantime, she had taken up Square Dancing with the Durham Twirlers, where she met Artis Gregory, who she married in June 1993 at the age of 70. Artis died in May 2009. She continued to live in Hillsborough, NC with her beloved dog, Tippi until Tippi's death in 2012. As it became more and more difficult to maintain a household on her own, she moved in with her daughter, Chyrl in 2015, where she lived and was well taken care of until her death.
Margaret always loved her church and accepted Christ into her life during her teen years while growing up in Winston Salem. During her lifetime, Margaret was an active member of Northwest Baptist Church in Winston Salem, NC; Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC; Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, NC; New Hope Church of the Nazarene in Hillsborough, NC; Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Cumming, GA and Piedmont Methodist Church in Cumming, GA.
In addition to Margaret's love and selfless service to her church, she was exceptionally talented in sewing. She made clothes for her children and everything from doll clothes to women's purses to men's suits. Margaret also loved to read and did so avidly until her sight failed her. At that time, she was able to enjoy audible books through the technology of computers and Bluetooth hearing aids.
She is survived by two of her three children, Bruce Dover of Roxboro, NC; Chyrl and husband Rich Hartshorn of Cumming, GA; granddaughter, Jennifer Dover of Durham, NC; grandson, Robert Dover and wife Melissa of Burlington, NC; two great-grandchildren, Preston and Lily Dover and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill Hopkins; son, Dwane Dover; 1st husband, Hugh Dover and 2nd husband, Artis Gregory.
The family deeply appreciates the services provided by Agape Hospice during the last two months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to her last church home in NC (New Hope) or GA (Piedmont UMC). She also had a passion for Samaritan's Purse/Operation Christmas Child. If you prefer, please designate your donation to that ministry.
