Locklan Downs

Claude LOCKLAN Downs, age 89, of Gainesville, GA passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Born in Ten Broeck, Alabama, he was the oldest of seven children born to the late Claude Russell and Lillian Turner Downs. Locklan was raised in Chattanooga, TN and was an active member of the Baptist community. He married his childhood sweetheart, Marjorie Louise Leslie Downs, and had been happily married for 68 years at her death in January 2014. They raised two children, Jerry Locklan and Donna Gale. Locklan was blessed to have a long and varied career including ownership of a TV sales and service company in Chattanooga, TN, Liaison Engineer for Martin Marietta in Orlando, FL and finally fulfilled his calling to help churches and non-profits finance growth. In that role, he formed Commonwealth Church Finance and was most proud of being able to honor God through his family and his work. He was fearless and soft-spoken, loved teaching Sunday School, growing flowers, fishing and working with his hands. His devotion to God shaped all that he did and his strong faith touched many lives. Locklan is survived by his daughter Gale Downs, grandsons Greg and Jason Downs, great grandchildren Ashleigh, Chelsea, Alexa and Sofia, sister Carolyn McCauley and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, son Jerry Locklan Downs, 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec 1 from 6:00-9:00pm at McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, Dec 2, 2015 at Cumming Baptist Church, Cumming, GA. Burial will be 1:00pm Thursday, Dec 3 at Forest Hills Cemetary in Chattanooga, TN. Flowers will be accepted at McDonald & Son or donations can be made in honor of Locklan Downs to Cumming Baptist Church, 115 Church Street, Cumming, GA 30040.
