Lillian McCaughan

–

Cumming, Georgia

Lillian L. McCaughan, age 89, of Cumming, Georgia passed away Monday October 21st after suffering a series of illnesses culminating in heart failure. Miss Lillian, as almost everyone called her, is survived by her daughter Karen McCaughan, and husband Robert.

Lillian and Robert were married 61 years. They met while both were serving in the Air Force, Lillian as a nurse, and Robert as a Flight Navigator. They married in February of 1963.

The couple’s son Robert McCaughan Jr., age 16, a committed Christian, died in 1986 while on a Church Youth Retreat. He died of drowning, while canoeing and swimming.

Lillian is a graduate of the Boston City Hospital Nursing Program. After becoming an RN, she served in the Air Force, first as a hospital nurse, then after Advanced Medical Training became a Flight Nurse.

As a nurse, among other things, Miss Lillian delivered seven babies, one on board an aircraft while in flight. She is also credited with saving the lives of two people. One a next door neighbor, a young teenage girl, who was suffering from an accidental gun shot to the throat, and bleeding to death. The other, a man bleeding profusely on a nearby sidewalk after falling through a plate glass window. She intervened and saved their lives, and continued caring for them until emergency medical people arrived.

Lillian was known by all as a very friendly, down-to-earth, caring person. She loved all her church and neighborhood friends, and of course especially her immediate family and friends. Lillian loved to go shopping and talk to all her friends. She especially loved to cook, watch cooking programs on TV, and then to cook—mostly for her husband.

She was recently asked, “If you could have anything in this life, that would make you extremely happy, what would that be?” She answered, “My Husband!”

Her funeral service will be held Monday, October 28th, at McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia, at 2:00 pm. Visitation at 1:00 pm. A military-honors graveside service, for family and friends, will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery on Thursday October 31st at 1:00 pm.

Lillian, although known to be in Heaven because of her faith in Christ, will be missed by all.

We encourage all who knew and loved Lillian to visit her memorial page. Please share your cherished memories, stories, and pictures of Lillian, as we remember and celebrate her remarkable life.
