Leland Hertz

Leland Wesley Hertz, 95, passed away on December 16, 2025. He was born in Kankakee, Illinois to Walter Wesley Hertz and Cora Belle Parsons Hertz.

He married Shirley Ferling in 1955 and together they were foster parents to 26 children and adopted children Johnny, Wes and Michelle. Lee was active in Creekside Church in Cumming GA and prior to that, Norcross UMC in Norcross, GA and Christ UMC in Columbia, MD. A devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by son Wes (Christy) Hertz, daughter Michelle Hertz, granddaughter Allyson and grandsons Jonathan and Christopher. He is predeceased by his son Johnny in 1973 and wife Shirley since 2009.

His hobbies were woodworking, cross stitching and quilting.

He was employed by Roper Corporation in Kankakee, IL and Baltimore, MD for 37 years and Belfort Instruments for 12 years. He retired in 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years during the Korean War.

Interment will be at Mound Grove Memorial Park in Kankakee, IL.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a donation could be made to a charity of choice.
