Lawrence Edward Holmes, 82, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA after briefly surviving a heart aneurysm.
Born on January 1, 1943, in New York City, New York, Larry — known fondly by many as “Montana”—lived a full and vibrant life marked by service, adventure, and deep love for his family and the outdoors. He was the eldest of two children born to Leo and Margaret Holmes.
A proud veteran, Larry served in the United States Air Force and fought bravely during the Vietnam War. He later earned his engineering degree from Florida State University and built a career at Rockwell International, where his work reflected both his intellect and dedication. After Rockwell, Larry built his own consulting company to round out his engineering career.
“Montana” was a man of many passions. He was an avid outdoorsman who found joy and peace in nature. A skilled tennis player, he also worked as a tennis pro, sharing his love of the sport with others. Later in life, he embraced his creative side, self-publishing through Amazon his novel Clearstream Style, a project that gave him great pride and satisfaction, and was an avid, award-winning photographer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Glenda Herd Holmes; his daughter, Jennifer Holmes Toy and her husband, Sam, of Cumming, GA; stepson Frank "Chip" Jones IV of Mauldin, SC; stepdaughter Ashley Payne Jones of Knoxville, TN; and step-granddaughter Ellis Ann Jones of Simpsonville, SC. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Holmes of Catskill, New York, and his niece, Michelle Hesse of Tucson, AZ.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 9, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. A memorial service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, July 10, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a processional departing at 12:00 p.m. for interment at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. The burial service will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Larry will be remembered for his sharp mind, kind spirit, and the adventurous heart he brought to everything he did. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, curiosity, and enduring love.
