Kathleen Hewins

–

Cumming, Georgia

Kathleen (Kay) Ann Hewins, age 84, of Dahlonega, Georgia was born on January 19, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to William Walcott and Kathleen Chaffee Walcott.  She peacefully passed away on September 25, 2024.

Kay’s family, because of her professed belief in Jesus, celebrates the knowledge that she is delighting in the wonders of her new heavenly home.  She was reunited with her beloved husband, Mel Hewins, who went home to be with the Lord in 2022.   Kay and Mel enjoyed their lives together immensely with family as well as beautiful friendships in and outside of Dahlonega.

Kay was loved by a flock of people who enjoyed her nurturing and generous spirit, fun loving nature, and spunky sense of humor.  This flock includes her five siblings: Bill Walcott (and his wife, Marianne), the late Bob Walcott, Judy French (and her husband Michael), Marilyn Eichenberg (and her late husband, Ken), and her late sister, Nancy Hartwick.  Kay was also deeply loved by her brother-in-law, Denny Hewins, sister-in-law, Lynn Hewins, son, Gary Hewins, and his wife, Angie Hewins, son, Steve Hewins, daughter, Karen Walters, as well as her daughter-in-law, Nunzia Pezzella, and her late son-in-law, Tommy Walters.  Kay was also extremely proud of her grandchildren: Ashleigh Smith, Jeffrey Webster, Madalyn Alessi, Abigail Freshley, Ross Walters, Joel Hewins, Jordan Hewins as well as his six great grandchildren: Paige, Jake, Hudson, Giselle, Cora and Phoebe.  Kay is survived by her wonderful nieces and nephews: Adam French, Kevin and Brian Eichenberger, Vicky Jankowski, Scott Hewins, and Kevin Hewins.

Kay supported Mel during his corporate career with Burns Security and Chrysler Corporation, after which they partnered together in a long season in real estate.  Kay managed numerous rental properties and positively impacted the lives of many because of the time and care she put into her work. A devoted and engaged mother, Kay cheered on her sons in sports and led her daughter's Girl Scout troop.

Over the years, Kay enjoyed attending dances with Mel, playing bridge in Dahlonega, camping at R Ranch in Dahlonega, caring for family, and laughing with friends.  Kay loved traveling with Mel, close friends, and family to many destinations.  Some of her favorite trips include Italy, London, Africa, Germany, Denmark, Nevada, and Amelia Island.  Kay grew up in Michigan and raised her family in Ohio, Maryland, and Georgia.

Kay and Mel frequented Dahlonega’s local “Picnic Cafe and Dessertery” on a regular basis for coffee and fellowship.  Many waitresses and sweet patrons of this coffee shop have enjoyed Kay’s friendly banter over the years.

Kay had a great love for her husband, family and friends and a deep gratitude for what God had given her to enjoy in life.  She will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held on October 2nd at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Dahlonega Funeral Home, 20 Gibson Rd., Dahlonega, GA 30533. Feel free to join the family after the service for a private reception at the Etowah Meadery located at 3003 Morrison Moore Pkwy E., Dahlonega, GA 30533.
