Cumming, Georgia

John Michael "Jack" O'Neill passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, after a short illness.

Born in Flushing, Queens, New York, Jack lived a life defined by service, dedication, and love for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud Navy serviceman whose kindness, strength, and sense of humor touched everyone who knew him.

Jack shared 36 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary T. O'Neill. Together, they built a life centered on family, friends, and adventure. He found great joy in sailing, traveling, and creating lasting memories with his children and grandchildren. He also thoroughly enjoyed raising a bottle of ice-cold Yuengling or a glass of Coppola Claret in good company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose (Stephens) O'Neill and John B. O'Neill.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Mary T. O'Neill; his children, John Michael O'Neill and his wife, Shannon, of Sandy Hook, Connecticut; Mary Sommers of Vancouver, Washington; and Elizabeth O'Neill Salley and her husband, Stephen, of Savannah, Georgia. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Brendan O'Neill, Rhyan O'Neill, Bridget Salley, Evelyn Salley, Madison Sommers, and Ford Sommers, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne O’Neill of Lafayette, Colorado, and his brother Steve O’Neill of Valley Stream, New York.

After graduating from Maritime College in 1964, Jack dedicated his professional life to both his country and his career, spending 35 years as a systems analyst with IBM while serving 25 years in the United States Navy Reserve, where he retired with the rank of Commander.

Those who knew Jack will remember him as a man of unwavering integrity, loyalty, and quiet strength. He was the rock of his family, known for his quick wit, warm smile, and love of a good laugh with others. Proud of his Irish heritage, he enjoyed tracing his ancestors in Ireland and listening to Irish music. Jack embraced life with gratitude and always treasured time spent with the people he loved most.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia. A reception will follow immediately after the service.
