JOHN EDWARD MACHADO

It is with profound sadness that the family of John Machado announces his passing, on the morning of December 10, surrounded by his wife and family, at his home in Cumming, Georgia. He was 90 years old.

John Machado was larger than life. His dynamic voice filled the room, and his presence made you feel like someone special. John was everyone’s friend. He was a loving husband and Dad who never missed a moment to tell you how much he loved and cared about you. His family meant more to him than anything in the world. Finally, as “Poppy”, he had rockstar status with his 4 Grandchildren.

John Edward Machado was born September 17, 1934, in Fall River, Massachusetts. After serving in the U.S Air Force, he attended The Ohio State University, where he was an All-American on the Big Ten championship baseball team and, while working on his graduate degree, served as the assistant head coach for the 1966 NCAA College World Series championship team. John still holds the all-time single season homerun record in the wood bat era. After working and raising a family, in St. Louis and Dayton, Ohio, he and his wife Glen lived in Savannah, before moving to Cumming, Georgia, in 2005, to be closer to family. In 2016, he was inducted into The Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Koeppel Machado; sister, Helen Sullivan; daughters, Deborah Spratt and Tamara Machado, and their husbands, Brian Spratt and Jeff Hopkins; granddaughter, Stephanie Roelke and her husband, Evan Roelke; grandsons, Syd Hopkins, Jon Spratt and Nick Hopkins; and great-grandson, Tyler Roelke.

The family will gather privately at the Georgia National Cemetery and announce a Celebration of Life at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association in John’s name.
