John Martin Horn, born on October, 1, 1948, in Brooklyn, NY, passed away on August 11, 2024, in Cumming, GA. He was a devoted husband of 54 years to the love of his life, Joan Horn and a loving father to daughters Kate (Jeff) Goering and Kris Bresk. John was further enriched and so proud of his cherished grandchildren Kyle, Sean, Alli, Emily, and Jake. He leaves behind a legacy of love with his brothers Bobby (Lynette), Pete (Mickey), and Leo (Michelle), along with numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Helen Horn, parents-in-law, Leroy and Helen Stickle, and brothers in law, William Stickle and William Spernow.
John graduated from Pompano Beach High School and later attended Florida Atlantic University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. He proudly served in the Army for three years as a military police officer providing security to a critical missile site in Korea, followed by another overseas tour in which he supervised inspections of Enlisted and NCO Clubs throughout the US posts in Germany.
Upon completion of his military career, he joined the Pompano Beach Police Department in 1972. Officer John Horn was a personable, motivated and capable addition to the force. He eventually transferred to the Detective Bureau supervising the growing Juvenile Unit. He earned promotions to Sergeant and Lieutenant where he was a popular shift commander of patrol units. John was selected to represent the Department by attending the FBI National Academy. In 1988, he was promoted to Captain and selected to lead the Operations Division, their largest command. John’s experience, straight-up demeanor and style gained the respect of this broad group of employees from seasoned pros to rookies on their first rides. He played on the department’s softball team and was an avid golfer. His ability to work with others and maintain the highest integrity in all matters was a major factor for many successful years. John's dedication to both military and public service was evident both in and out of uniform. John retired in 1996 relocating to Cumming, Georgia.
In retirement, John landed his dream job at Laurel Springs Golf Club where he served as the Outings Director/Pro Shop Manager. Given his passion for meeting new people and making friends, he was a perfect fit for this role. He retired from Laurel Springs after 13 years but left with many more friends and memories.
Of course, John never went anywhere in life without making new friends. A few years ago, he and Joan made their final move to a new community, Nestledown Farms, where they connected quickly with many of the other residents and have continued to build cherished memories.
A passionate life long New York Yankees fan and avid golfer, John found joy and relaxation on the greens and while cheering on his favorite baseball team. His hobbies reflected his love for competition and camaraderie. John also loved sharing stories of his life’s journey to all that would listen.
