Cumming, Georgia
Joan Marie Silveira, age 91, passed peacefully at home in Cumming, Georgia, on April 16, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel (Mel) R. Silveira, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage, her beloved son, Glenn, sweet grandson Patrick, and her three cherished brothers, Richard (Dick) Eason, Peter (Pete) Eason, and Patrick (Marty) Boyle.
Born in Brooklyn NY in 1934, she was the daughter of the late Michael Boyle and the late Eileen Henderson Eason Boyle, who both came to the United States from Ireland in the early 1900’s. Joan spent many years living in California, and especially loved her years in Shell Beach with views of the Pacific from the little ranch home she shared with her husband Mel after retirement.
She loved to dance, and met her husband Mel at a USO social while he was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They married in 1955 and danced together the rest of their lives. She cared deeply for her family and good friends she cherished throughout her life. Joan loved thrift shopping and getting great deals on beautiful things to decorate her home. She had a soft spot in her heart for all animals, and contributed throughout her life to their well being, including caring for her own pets and through helping many shelters. In her last few years in Cumming, she enjoyed daily wildlife watching from her kitchen, with birds, squirrels and raccoons as her regular visitors.
Five wonderful ladies helped the family care for Joan in her last years of life at home and will forever be special to Joan and her family; Kathy, Susan, Erin, Gitte, and Lori. We know Joan thanks you and now watches over you from Heaven.
She is survived by her daughters, Laura Wedell and husband Lance of Cumming, Georgia, and Diane Shapiro and husband Alan, also of Cumming, four grandchildren, Erik (wife Felicia), Erica (husband Branden), Christopher (wife Courtney) and Nicholas, and four great grandchildren, Tommy, Cassidy, Kaylee and Julian.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held privately. Contributions in her memory may be made to Forsyth County Humane Society.
