Joan M. McGraw

–

Gainesville, Georgia

Joan Metheny McGraw, 85, lived a truly extraordinary life, defined by grace, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to others. Her radiant smile lit up every room, and her warmth and kindness touched all who had the pleasure of knowing her. A true Southern gentlewoman, Joan delighted in making new friends and was always the first to lend a helping hand to friends, family, and strangers alike.

Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on October 24, 1939, Joan spent the last three years of her life in Gainesville, Georgia, where she passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025.

For 66 years, Joan embraced her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with boundless love and dedication. She never missed a child’s game, performance, or milestone, celebrating every joy and offering strength through every challenge. Joan poured herself into her family, and her presence was a constant source of comfort and encouragement.

Beyond her family, Joan generously gave her time and talents to her community, notably as a past President of the Assistance League of Atlanta. A successful businesswoman, master gardener, and competitive duplicate bridge player, Joan brought passion and purpose to everything she did. A world explorer, Joan travelled to eighty-three countries across six continents. She brought warmth and elegance to every home she created, where she hosted countless gatherings for family and friends.

Joan is survived by her husband Cal McGraw; sister, Emily Metheny; brother, Hugh Metheny; children, Stephen (Reny, spouse), Timothy (Anna, spouse), and David; grandchildren Kelly (Medanich) (Matt, spouse), Emily, Jillian (Champion) (Chase, spouse), Anna (Miller) (Christian, spouse), Miranti, and Michael; and great-grandchildren William Medanich and Olivia Champion. Joan is preceded in death by her mother, Dorlas Watkins Metheny, and father, Rev. J.B. Metheny.

Joan will be remembered for her loving spirit, lively humor, and deep faith. She never met a stranger and was a true and loyal friend to many. Her mission was to do something positive for someone every day.

Friends and family are invited to Dahlonega Methodist Church at 107 S. Park Street in Dahlonega on May 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. for visitation. The service will follow at 11:30 a.m., with a luncheon afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, Joan asked for donations to Dahlonega Methodist Church (dahmc.org/giving), where she was a member for over twenty years.
