James Walter Metz Jr.

–

Cumming, Georgia

J. Walter Metz Jr. a lifelong resident of Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away in Cumming, GA on
November 10, 2023 at the age of 88. Walter was born to James Walter Sr. and Helen Jeanette
Lummus on September 27, 1935 in Miami, Florida. After attending Miami Edison High School,
he enlisted in the Air Force. Upon discharge, he studied Horticulture at the University of
Florida.

While at University, Walter met his wife, Marcia Freeman, and they went on to have six
children: Jimmy, Billy, Suzanne, Tommy, Missy, and Jennifer.

After graduating with a B.S. in Horticulture, Walter's love for floral design led him to open his
first floral shop in Lantana, Florida. But he soon realized his true passion was sharing his
knowledge and love for floral design with others. That's why he established the South Florida
School of Floral Design in Lake Worth, FL, in 1967. Walter's school was a melting pot of cultures,
with students from around the world attending his classes.

During his five decades of teaching, he touched the lives of many. Despite being loved by so
many, he remained humble and never sought the spotlight. His dedication was driven by his
passion for teaching and inspiring students. He was not only a teacher but also a friend to many.
Walter was a valued member of the Florida State Floral Association (FSFA) and The Florist
Association of Palm Beach County, where he contributed his expertise in various roles. His
dedication and commitment to these organizations were greatly appreciated.

Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades from the FSFA, including The Harry H.
Killian Award in 1987, The FSFA Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in
2015. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated
outstanding dedicated service and has made a significant impact on FSFA International, going
above and beyond for the members of the floral industry. Walter truly made a difference in the
lives of those he worked with and will always be remembered for his expertise and dedication.
Many will remember him for being an amazing letter writer and having a real talent for putting
words on paper. He was also a big fan of musicals and always had a song in his heart. His
children will remember him as an amazing dad who loved nothing more than taking his kids on
adventures across the United States in a VW van, tents, and a popup trailer. They explored
national parks and monuments together and made memories that would last a lifetime.

Walter is survived by his children, William F. Metz, Suzanne C. Metz, Melissa (John) Metz
Wright, and Robert (Jessica) C. Walsh, as well as 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his children, James Walter Metz III, Thomas J. Metz and Jennifer A. Metz.
