James Hunter “Hunter” Hogue Jr.
May 19, 2026
James Hunter “Hunter” Hogue Jr., age 80, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at Northside Hospital in Cumming, Georgia. Born May 1, 1946 in Atlanta, Georgia, Hunter lived a life defined by curiosity, craftsmanship, patience, and a deep love for teaching others.
Hunter grew up in Atlanta and was a proud member of the first graduating class of Pace Academy. He later attended Auburn University, where he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Hunter retired from United Parcel Service as a project manager and was a master electrician and proud member of IBEW Local 613. Throughout his life, he approached every challenge with the mind of an engineer and the hands of a craftsman. He loved understanding how things worked and believed almost anything could be improved, repaired, or rebuilt with enough patience and determination.
More than anything, Hunter loved teaching. Whether he was building something, organizing a workspace, solving an electrical problem, or showing someone how to properly complete a task, he always turned projects into lessons. Family and friends often joked there was always a “Hogue way” to do things — thoughtful, detailed, and exact. If you spent time with Hunter, chances are you were handed a project to help with, but what he was really giving you was his time, his knowledge, and his care.
Hunter was known as a father figure to many people beyond his own family. He was patient, intelligent, caring, and endlessly curious. He had an incredible attention to detail and a gift for making people feel capable by teaching them something new. Friends will remember his fascinating projects, his ability to fix almost anything, and his constant desire to learn and share what he knew.
He especially loved raising his children and grandchildren and took great pride in the lives they built. He also had a tremendous love for dogs and never hesitated to take in or care for stray animals.
Hunter is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Kelley and her husband Trey Kelley, and their children Colin and Grace; his son, Ryan Hogue and his wife Allison Hogue, and their children Kinsley and Madilyn; and his brother, Glenn Scott Hogue.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Hunter Hogue Sr.; his mother, Frances Mullen Hogue; and his sister, Edee Hogue Temple.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Dahlonega Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter in Hunter’s memory, especially through donations of supplies or support for stray and rescued dogs — a cause that was very close to his heart.
In James Hunter's memory, we invite you to share stories, upload photographs, and celebrate the life of a truly exceptional man on his memorial page.
