Gertrude Marie Reeves, age 87, died peacefully on Friday morning March 17th at her residence surrounded by loved ones. She was born February 25th 1930 in Elizabeth, New Jersey the youngest daughter of Peter and Mary Gutowski.
Gertrude was effervescent, full of charisma, caring, spunky, funny, giving, dedicated and loving. She was passionate about music; singing, playing, listening and dancing through each day. She also had a passion for adventure which led her to travel whenever she could. Above all Gertrude had a servant's heart and everyone who met her was loved on in some way, from her time as a preschool teacher to opening her home to others on the holidays or feeding numerous people. She never stopped loving or doing, even in front of the TV her hands would be busy knitting or crocheting a gift for someone. At home, she would frequently be found cooking and sharing her love through good food. Gertrude enjoyed a good conversation and was always willing to chat, never having met a stranger. Gertrude went through life full of joy and a song in her heart looking for the next chance to brighten someone's day and share the love of Jesus with them.
Early in life she met her soulmate George W. Reeves and they were married on February 20th, 1949. Together they had three children, Gary Reeves, Gale McCarthy and Gwenn Fox. In 1963 the family moved to Atlanta and became active members at Clairmont Baptist Church. Gertrude directed the preschool choir, sang in the adult choir and helped teach Sunday school classes. She and George also sang in the Atlanta Christian Chorus and Briarlake Baptist Church Senior Choir. For over two decades she was a faithful member of the Jubalheirs participating in concerts all over Georgia, the US, as well as Costa Rica and Germany. Gertrude and George visited the Atlanta Union Mission for over 20 years sharing their love of the Lord and could be found on many Christmas Eve's sharing hot chocolate, cookies and the Christmas story there. Gertrude shared a love of bowling with her husband and they competed regularly in several leagues. She also enjoyed sharing the lanes with her family and teaching the nuances of a good hook or how to convert a split.
She was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Mary, brother Edward, her husband George and son Gary and is survived by her sister Helen, her daughters Gale and Gwenn, daughter-in-law Suzanne, and her 13 grand/great-grandkids: Kathryn and John Tribble their daughter Aubrey, Lauren Reeves, Patrick McCarthy, Danny McCarthy, Sean McCarthy, Emily Fox, Brian and Lindsey Fox their son Jeremiah, and Tiffany and Matt Ward.
