Roswell, Georgia

Mr. Fred Leroy Van Laningham 99, of Roswell, GA passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

Fred is survived by his children; Nancy (Mark)Thomas; and Beverly (Jim) Pierce.

Fred also leaves behind four grandchildren; Jennifer (Paul) Aliff, Amy (Reid) Pichard, Christopher (Cortney) Pierce, and Megan (Aaron) Heaton.

Nine great grandchildren; Michael Aliff, Matthew Aliff, William Aliff, McLean Pichard, Molly Pichard, Alden Pierce, Ainsley Pierce, Ava Pierce, and Katie Grace Heaton.

Fred joined the Navy at age 17 on December 1, 1942, and had to receive his parents’ permission to do so. He received their permission only after meeting with the principal of his high school to assure he could graduate.

He served with distinction as an Aviation Machinist Mate Second Class, undergoing specialized training at multiple Naval Air Training Centers. He received the Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal in recognition of his valor and exemplary service.

He served in active duty until June 22, 1946, and continued to serve his country in the US Naval Reserve until June 22, 1950.

Fred met his wife, Bernice, when she was 16 years old, and he was in the Navy. Upon Fred’s discharge from the Navy, they were married in Mattoon, IL, on January 11, 1946. They were married for 73 years, until Bernice’s passing in 2019.

Fred and Bernice had a wonderful life together and traveled extensively while he worked for Union Carbide Corporation. Fred received many accolades during his career. He was very humble, yet proud, of his service with the Navy and never wanted to be recognized as a hero. Which indeed he was.

Fred was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son and brother. He will be remembered for many things but especially for his laugh and how much he loved his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Atria Senior Living, North Point in Alpharetta, GA. The date to be confirmed. He and Bernice will later be together at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
