Cumming, Georgia
As a young girl, Frances Lillian Sklenka arrived in America with her mother- the year was 1907. They had no way of finding her father that had arrived before them. As they wandered the streets of Boston, they recognized a language they could speak and questioned a gentleman speaking German. Fortunately he recognized her father s name and reunited their small family. The eldest of twelve children, Frances cared for all of her brothers and sisters. She is not survived by any of them. Frances loved life, and she loved to learn. She educated herself way beyond her eighth grade schooling. She learned proper etiquette from helping care for a family at their home. There were stories about working at the candy store, but her flair for fashion and drama seemed to drive her. She sewed anything and everything that could handle a needle and thread. At 105, Frances witnessed changes in life that many of us could only imagine to her, the greatest of these was the invention of electricity. This, she claimed, changed everything. Much of her life was spent as a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and volunteering. For over twenty years, Frances walked to and volunteered at South Miami Hospital in South Miami, Florida well into her nineties. Until she moved to Georgia almost three years ago, this remarkable woman lived on her own. Frances met her loving husband of 62 years at a church dance. At the time, he gave her his card and asked her to dance. They married and together they created a legacy that will last a lifetime. They had five children; Robert Sklenka, Ronald Sklenka, Connie Atkinson, MaryLou Stone, and Susie Ogle. These five children then went on to bless their lives with 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She will be loved and missed by all those whose lives she touched. A mass will be held in honor of Frances at St. Brendan Catholic Church at 4PM on Thursday, January 6, 2011. The church is located at 4633 Shiloh Road in Cumming, GA. Flowers can be sent to McDonald & Son Funeral Home located at 150 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, GA.
