Florence "Deen" Lister

Florence "Deen" Lister of Cumming, Georgia, passed away February 18, 2023.

Deen was born May 8, 1933 to the late Merritt and Grace Shell in Sylvester, Georgia. Deen grew up on her family farm in Pineview, Georgia. She attended Berry College in Rome. She then began her teaching career of grades 1st to 6th until she had children of her own becoming a full time mother.

Deen was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John William "Jake" Lister. They raised their two children Johnny and Nita on Wilmington Island, Georgia. They also lived in Louisville, Kentucky, and Marietta, Georgia. After Jake's retirement from Chevron Oil Company, Jake and Deen settled at St. Simons Island, Georgia. There they spent many wonderful years and were very involved in the St. Simons United Methodist Church.

Deen always kept a very busy social calendar. She was involved in many groups over the years including Welcome Wagon, Methodist Church groups, and Dining Divas. Deen loved floral arranging, flowers, and birds. Most of all, she adored her family. Deen made her final home in Cumming to be near her children.

In addition, Deen was preceded in death by her brother William "Billy" Shell; niece Sheila Shell; and granddaughter Haley Marie Lister.

Deen is survived by her son John William (Victoria) Lister Jr. of Santa Rosa Beach. Florida; daughter Anita (Ray) Burnette of Cumming, Georgia; grandson Johnathan (Maria) Burnette of Annapolis Junction, Maryland; niece Bessie Grace (Dr. Steve) Little of Hawkinsville, Georgia; great nephew Tommy Little of Hawkinsville, Georgia; nephew David (Georgia) Lister of Alpharetta, Georgia; and niece Renee Lister of Chamblee, Georgia.

Deen is also survived by special friends Jimmye Reeves, Kevin (Cathy) Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell Jr., and Patti Prognosh among others.

Deen will be laid to rest with her husband at Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, Georgia, on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 2:00PM.
