Eugene R. Carter (Gene)
Eugene R Carter was born Sept 5, 1921 in Plainfield, IL and left this world on Feb 21, 2022. He lived a long wonderful life reaching over 100 years old. A celebration of life for Eugene Carter of Suwanee, GA will be at a later date.
He was the son of Lester and Nellie (Culver) Carter of Plainfield, IL. On May 22, 1948 he married the love of his life Mary Jane Birtwistle and they resided in Joliet, IL while raising their 3 children. Gene worked for 43 years at Commonwealth Edison in Chicago. Retiring in 1984, he and Mary Jane started spending winters in Osteen FL and summers in Joliet, IL. After selling their home in Osteen Fl, they moved to Winter Haven, FL to be closer to their son Gary. Then Dec 2020 they moved to Suwanee, GA to be closer to their daughter Karyl.
Gene enjoyed his golf games, fishing and fishing trips to Canada, traveling with friends, playing cards and board games, loved his woodworking projects, summer vacations to Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin and spending time with family and special friends. He made great friendships where ever he went.
Gene and Mary Jane were active members of Grace United Methodist Church in Joliet, IL and the Osteen Methodist Church. Gene continued sharing his talents as he helped to create new leaded glass windows in the sanctuary at the Osteen Church and loved singing in the choirs at both churches.
Gene was a very proud World War II Marine Corp Veteran. He served in the 4th Marine Division participating in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, and Iwo Jima campaigns. He had one specific memory in Iwo Jima that surpasses all other World War II memories and that was the moment he looked over and saw the Marines raise the American Flag.
Survivors include his loving wife Mary Jane of 73 years. They have three children: Kathy (Jim) Massa, Hampton, IL, Karyl ( Wayne) Palmer, Suwanee GA, and Gary (Anni) Carter, Noblesville, IN. He is blessed with 10 grandchildren: Jayme (Toni) Massa, Nikole (Rob) Meredith, Lauren (Bryan) Long, Kris (Sarah) Massa, Cameron (Sara) Carter, Jeff Palmer, Ryan Carter, Aaron Carter, Katie (Tyler) Briesath, Kim Palmer. He is also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren: Isabella Massa, Maci Massa, Keegan Meredith, Sophia Meredith, Shaya Sutter, Norah Long, Stella Jane Carter, and Savannah Massa. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Eugene was a shining example of a life well lived and one who used his God given talents to help others.
