Dorothy Beall Smith

–

Cumming, Georgia

Dorothy (Dot) Tucker Smith, 96, died peacefully on Friday, March 16, 2018 after a long and fulfilling life.

Born in 1922 to Elizabeth and Hubert Tucker, Dot was one of five children and was raised in the South Georgia town of Ocilla. She attended Huntington College in Montgomery Alabama. Huntington College was a short distance from Maxwell Field Airbase where she met her husband Captain Charles Smith a B-25 pilot. After World War II, Dot and Charles had two sons Wayne and Gary and settled in Avondale Estates Georgia in April of 1956. It is there they raised their family. Dot was a devoted mother and home maker until Charles passed suddenly in February of 1972. She then took a job with the Emory School of business where she became registrar. There over the next 17 years, Dot spent her time helping over 3000 students. In 1989, to honor that achievement, Dot was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the school's alumni association for her work as registrar.

After her retirement from Emory in the spring of 1989, Dot became involved with volunteer work at the United Methodist Children's home in Decatur. There she worked daily assisting in the home's three annual flea markets-events designed to raise money for the home. Dot was the "book lady" carefully organizing the donated books in preparation for Sale.

Dot was also a longtime member of Decatur First United Church. She was a piano player for her Sunday School Class and volunteered at the church.

Dot loved her yard! On any given day, Dot could be found working in her yard. She kept and maintained her yard by herself through her late eighties.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband Charles Smith, her brothers Hal and Hubert Tucker and her Sister Ann Smith. Dot's presence and optimistic spirit will be missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

There will be an informal visitation held at McDonald and Son Funeral Home located at 150 Sawnee Drive on Saturday March 24 from 1:30pm until 2:30pm, visitation will be followed by a service at the McDonald and Son Chapel starting at 2:30pm and interment will follow at Sawnee View Garden's in Cumming, Ga.
