Donald Lewis Powell

Donald L. (Don) Powell, 88, passed away on Monday, March 27, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth after a long battle with cancer. Don, a resident of Gwinnett County with a Conyers address, was born on August 16, 1928, in Augusta, Ga. He said he lived a long life through the grace of God. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 28, at Snellville United Methodist Church in Snellville. Donations may be sent to Berkmar United Methodist Church, 675 Pleasant Hill Road, Lilburn, GA 30047. Don was a member of Snellville UMC and very active in both churches. Don loved his wife, Rev. Lyn (Marbaugh) Powell, pastor of Berkmar UMC. He loved, and was very proud of his son, Kim Powell (Terri), and daughter, Stephanie Mikula (Fallon). Two wonderful grandsons, Jason and Richard Powell, preceded him in death. His granddaughter, Dr. Allison Bailey (Charles), grandsons Christian Mikula (Megan) and Preston Mikula (Dani), great-grandson Matthew Ainsworth and great-granddaughters Harper Mikula and Isabel and Grace Ainsworth were very special to him. Don's parents were Sophia Renfro and Alfred Linton. He began flying at age 14 (you could do that then) and loved his airplanes all his life. He went to work for the computer company Burroughs (later known as Unisys) in 1948 before the company had a computer division. Therefore, he learned computer field engineering from the ground up. He spent 42 years with the company and was grateful for its good care of its employees. Lyn always said Don had 1,000 best friends, and he loved every one of them dearly. His brother Bill Powell coined the phrase, "Keep on keeping on" as a radio host in the Macon area in the 1940s. And so, that is Don's parting message to you - "Keep on keeping on!"
