It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved David N. Whaley Sr. Affectionately known as Dad, Dude, PuPa and Old Man to those closest to him. David was born on December 29, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived an extraordinary life filled with generosity, dedication, creativity, and wit, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, David was a beacon of kindness, wisdom and commitment particularly with taking care for his family. His radiant spirit and unique sense of humor brought an abundance of joy and laughter into our lives.
David's dedication was reflected in his 44 years at the CDC in Atlanta, where his hard work and commitment made a profound impact. His passion for woodcarving - each masterpiece embodying his love for nature, animals and his unique sense of style. Riding his beloved tractor and lawnmower was another of David's favorite pastimes, reflecting his love for the simple, beautiful moments in life. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn," and in David's case, the creation of a thousand memories is in one man's generous heart and gifted hands.
David leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. He is survived by his children, Neal (Bobbie) Whaley and David (Belinda) Whaley; grandson Jake Whaley; Kayd and Joni “granddaughter” Thrasher and their children Kayleigh and Luke. He is also survived by his siblings, Franklin Lamar (Donna) Whaley, Betty Louise Shotts, brother-in-law Jimmy (Barbara) Dyer and a slew of nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, John and Ellie Whaley, and his beloved wife of over 50 years, Shelba Dyer Whaley.
The family welcomes everyone to celebrate David's life. The visitation for David will take place on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Dahlonega Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at the Dahlonega Memorial Park at 2:30 PM.
As we celebrate his life, let us remember his generosity, his dedication, and his love for others, and may we strive to carry forward the remarkable legacy of David.
