Daniel Bowers

–

Dawsonville, Georgia

Daniel Emerson Bowers, age 94, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023. Daniel was born in Verdon Nebraska to Herschel and Marguerite Bowers, and was raised on an apple farm. He received a Bachelors's Degree in History from Doane College in Nebraska and served as a Captain in the USAF during the last two years of the Korean War But was stationed in Japan. After his time in the military, he worked his entire career in management for United Air Lines. He retired with his second wife, Carol Bowers, in Dahlonega in 1988. Carol preceded him in death in 2019.

Dan loved Dahlonega and had a house built in Copper Ridge, where he and Carol had many dogs and cats over the years.Dan served with Rotary as a third generation Rotarian.

Dan's great loves in life were travel and animals. He traveled all over the world, including India, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Singapore. His other passion was steam trains and he rode those wherever he could find them. His favorite being in Chama, northern Mexico.

Dan is perhaps best known in Dahlonega for starting the PAWS rescue group, which pulled dogs and cats out of the Lumpkin county shelter and transferred them into adoptive homes. He was responsible for saving hundreds of animals over many years and finally retired from that group when he was in his 80's.

Dan is survived by his two daughters, Holly Bowers of Denver Colorado and Kristi Linton of Thornton Colorado.

We'd like to thank all of his friends in Dahlonega for their support over the years, especially Laura LaTourette, Susan Hunt, and Kevin Shortridge, who helped us navigate long distance elder care. We could not have done it without them.

Manor Lake in Dawsonville took excellent care of Dan over the last year. We highly recommend their services.

Dan would encourage everyone to adopt a shelter animal and give them a good life....in return you will receive just as much joy. Contributions in his memory may be made to any animal welfare organization. There will be a private memorial gathering in the future, no public service.
