Craig Tanner

–

Atlanta, Georgia

Craig McWhorter Tanner passed away peacefully in Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, October 7th, 2024, following a courageous three-year battle against an undefined lower motor neuron disease. Craig was born on August 7th, 1961, and raised the fifth of six children of Ray and Doris Tanner. He is survived by his daughter, June, and his brothers Ray, Curtis (Cathy) and Randy (Diane) Tanner, his sisters Mary Helen (Ray) Little and Meg Tanner, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Craig had many passions in his life, but his greatest love by far was being June’s father. June was the light of his life and his priority even as his disease created separation. Once she took her first breath, he dedicated his life to loving, raising, teaching, modeling and supporting her until he took his last breath.

Craig’s passion for photography led to his desire to teach his unique skills to a wide range of photographers. Through his workshops taught across the country, he was able to inspire many and challenge the same to following their true passion. His gift for public speaking about the psychological and philosophical aspects of photography gave way to his leading an open mic in Savannah, his chosen home, and the rebirth of his message through his music. As with his photography, teaching, and public speaking, Craig’s music was self-taught, captivating and created from his personal life experiences. Craig’s ability to capture an image, through his camera, his songs and his stories, was authentic and a gift to everyone who knew him as a brother, friend, mentor, or just as that amazing guy you met along the way.

Craig connected with each person along his journey in such a thoughtful and unique way. He will be remembered as one who encouraged and inspired many. While he will certainly be greatly missed, his impact will live on in the countless lives that he touched.
