Comell Watts Moore
1938 – 2025
Our beloved sister Comell Watts Moore, 87, passed away Monday, March 24, 2025. Born in Tiger, GA to Earl and Myrtle Watts, Comell grew up in a family of nine, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She was the second child is the Watts Family.
Comell graduated from Tallulah Falls Georgia in 1956. She moved to Atlanta and got a job with Citizens and Southern Bank in Buckhead. New people had difficulty pronouncing her name, so they called her ‘Candy’, a name that stuck. She was sweet as candy! She was always Comell to her parents and siblings. Only family called her Comell.
She married and had a son, Perry Scott Smith. For 20 years she devoted her life to family, church and civic work. During this time she was nominated as the Volunteer of the Year for the American Cancer Society, a charter member of the Riverdale Women’s Club and Club Woman of the Year. Comell (Candy) tirelessly championed community causes.
At 40 with her child raised, she turned her energies to education. A Bachelor’s in Science of Education at Georgia State University began her journey to teaching Adult Literacy, which became her passion. Building the Adult Literacy program in Forsyth County, Comell (Candy) became one of the first fulltime teachers Governor Miller placed in the Georgia counties starting with 10 computers. In December 1997, the Adult Literacy class was the first to be in the new Forsyth County Lanier Technical Institute, serving over 500 students a year.
In 1998 she met and married Joseph Moore and together they built the house of their dreams, living there for the next 20 years. Comell loved playing her Grand Piano, singing, entertaining, fashion and gourmet cooking in their beautiful home. Comell and Joseph traveled, spent time with family and friends, and were dedicated members of the Johns Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Myrt; her husband, Joseph Moore; sons, Jeffrey and Scott Smith, brothers, Bill Watts (Marcella) Jesse (Merilee) Jerry (Teruko) Art watts (Kay Bathe) and sister Betsy Henson.
Comell is survived by her loving brother John (Somchit) and sisters, Susie Holmberg and Debbie Crimmings (Jack), and many loved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
