Cecil Gaines Montgomery went home to be with the Lord on October 15, 2021 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Susanna Wierengo Montgomery; his children Liz Brown (Byron), Jennie Harchfield (Shane), Sarah Gravitt (Keith), Wesley Montgomery (Karoline), and Daniel Montgomery (Rebecca). His pride and joy were his thirteen grandchildren: Caroline, Matthew, Benjamin, and Zachary Brown; Carlie, Anna Grace, Clara Beth, and Seth Harchfield; Emily Jane and Aubrey Gravitt; Ira, Evren, and Ember Montgomery. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte McBee, his sister-in-law Jane Wierengo, his niece, Kelle Linville, and his nephew, Kurt McBee.
Gaines was born on April 9, 1943 to Cecil Reginald Montgomery and Margaret Gaines Montgomery in Anniston, Alabama. He loved his time at Anniston High and forged lifelong friendships there. He went on to study at Georgia Tech where he earned a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was recognized for his many achievements and innovations during his lengthy career at Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent Technologies.
He was a jack-of-all-trades. He loved music, especially hymns, playing basketball and softball, and tinkering on old cars and guns. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hiking, and conversations on the front porch swing. He deeply cherished time with his family. Nothing delighted his heart more than to gather around the piano with his children to worship the Lord in song. His impact as a Boy Scout Troop leader in Atlanta lives on in the lives of those he sacrificially loved. He poured his life into the ministries of North Lanier Baptist Church, where he joyfully served as a founding member and deacon. His heart of mercy always went out to the "least of these."
Gaines was a devoted and selfless husband, father, and grandfather. Most of all, he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His legacy of faith will live on for many generations to come.
