Barbara Schaffer

Barbara and Schaffer, Age 78, of Cumming, Georgia passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2026. She was at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Barbara was born on June 25, 1948, in Waukegan, Illinois to Irv and Frieda Kaddatz. It was in Waukegan that she met the love of her life, Larry Franklin Schaffer. Barbara and Larry married in June of 1968 and shared 60 wonderful years. Together, Barbara and Larry built a beautiful life and settled in Canton, Georgia. They spent many cherished years boating on Lake Lanier, traveling to the Caribbean, and living vibrantly.

For many years, Barbara was an award-winning realtor with Century 21. She worked diligently and tirelessly to own her own Century 21 realty business during the 1970s. This was during a time that women weren’t socially given opportunities to succeed, and succeed is exactly what she did. After moving to Georgia with their daughter, Kimberly Anne Payne, Barbara became involved in financial services, serving physicians in the greater Atlanta area. She stayed with Fagin Advisory Services until retirement. She adored traveling, having visited much of Europe, the US and British Virgin Islands.

Barbara will be remembered for her elegance, adventurous spirit, and her passion for collecting art and jewelry.

Above all, Barbara loved her family. She has survived by her beloved husband, Larry Franklin Schaffer, her sister Sandra Jean Lundberg, her daughter Kimberly Anne Payne, son-in-law Christopher Clay Payne, grandchildren Tristan Gabriel Payne and Jordan Delaney Moon, son-in-law Ingyu Moon as well as extended family and many beloved relatives and friends in Georgia, Tennessee, and Illinois.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Family Hospice, who allowed us to keep Barbara home and safe through her entire journey with Alzheimer’s.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home on Friday, July 17th, 2026 at 2:00pm.
