Ann Tinnin Shafer, 77, passed away on August 27, 2026, leaving behind a life defined by determination, intelligence, independence, and a career she truly loved.
Ann was born on September 23, 1948, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to John and Elizabeth Tinnin. She grew up alongside her brother, John Wells Tinnin III, in Yazoo County, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her husband, Herbert Shafer.
Ann graduated from Mississippi State University and later received her Juris Doctor from Woodrow Wilson Law School. She went on to practice alongside her husband Herb Shafer and built a remarkable career as a well-known criminal defense attorney. The law was far more than an occupation for her—it was a passion and an enormous part of who she was. Her career brought her into the lives of countless people and gave her a lifetime of experiences and stories that were uniquely her.
But beyond the courtroom, Ann was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Paige Grove and her husband, Dave; her four grandsons, Collin, Chandler, Cortland and Cooper; and her great-grandchildren, Harper and Tatum.
Ann took great pride in being “Mimi” to her grandsons and was an active part of their lives as they grew up. Their accomplishments were a tremendous source of pride for her, and she was always happy to share what each of them was doing.
Ann’s life cannot be summed up simply by the dates she lived. It is found in the career she built, the family she loved, the friends and stories she accumulated, and the generations who will carry pieces of her forward.
Those who knew Ann knew she had a personality all her own. She will be remembered for her strength, her determination, her unmistakable personality, and for being, quite simply, Ann.
There will be a visitation 3:00-5:00pm and a funeral service following at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at McDonald Family Funeral Home, 150 Sawnee Drive in Cumming, GA. A graveside service will take place in Yazoo City, Mississippi at later date.
We encourage everyone to share their fun filled memories of Annie and upload photos to the memorial page, a tribute to a life well-lived with passion.
